A few months ago we sent out a questionnaire with our regular newsletter as we wanted very much to give you, our customers and subscribers the opportunity to say which authors and books you would like to see given the Nepenthe treatment.
One name came back with remarkable frequency, ALGERNON BLACKWOOD, which is just as well as we have been planning this title for some time.
Â
At Nepenthe Press we have a particular passion for Folk Horror tales and an illustrated collection of Algernon Blackwood's finest work is the book more than any other we would want in our personal collection. Pan's Garden: Weird Tales from Nature is a collection of tales taken from the (1912) collection 'Pan's Garden' as well as stories from his collections 'The Listener and Others' (1907), John Silence (1908), The Lost Valley (1910) and many more.
Â
H P Lovecraft in his essay 'Supernatural Horror in Literature' spoke of Blackwood thus;
Â
'Some of the finest spectral literature of this or any age. Of the quality of Mr Blackwood's genius there can be no dispute; for no one has even approached the skill, seriousness, and minute fidelity with which he records the overtones of strangeness in ordinary things and experiences....he is the one absolute and unquestioned master of the weird atmosphere.'
Â
His short stories The Willows and The Wendigo are often cited as two of the finest weird tales ever written , and of course they are included here in this collection.
Â
We are also beyond excited to announce Pan's Garden: Weird Tales from Nature will be illustrated by an artist who we can state unequivocally as being the finest living artist of the weird and occult SANTIAGO CARUSO. Santiago has created the defining illustrations for collections of work by H P Lovecraft, Robert W Chambers (Centipede Press) and Jane Eyre (The Folio Society.) We have commissioned a suite of new paintings for this collection which will be printed letterpress in three variant editions.
We genuinely believe this will be a genre defining edition for collectors of weird fiction. It will be available for pre-order December 2025.
Â
Stories include:
The Wood of the Dead
The Willows
Ancient Sorceries
The Wendigo
Secret Worship
The Man who played Upon the Leaf
Man Who the Trees Loved
The Touch of Pan
and a number of less known more obscure stories.
